Aluminium 2017 is an age-hardenable alloy that mainly consists of aluminium (about 91.5%) and copper (3.5–4.5%), along with smaller amounts of manganese (0.4–1.0%), magnesium (0.4–0.8%), and trace elements. This unique blend gives it impressive strength and good machinability, making it perfect for critical forging applications. When heat-treated in tempers like T4 and T6, it can achieve a tensile strength of up to 430 MPa and a yield strength of around 280 MPa. With a density of 2.78 g/cm³, it boasts excellent fatigue resistance and moderate corrosion resistance, making it an ideal choice for structural and load-bearing components.

Aluminum 2017 is suitable for forging but has limited high-temperature resistance. For high-temperature forging applications, consider alloys with better heat resistance, like 2219 or 2618.
The workability of Aluminum 2017, being moderate, affects forging by requiring precise temperature control (400–480°C) to prevent cracking and achieve proper plastic deformation, making it suitable for intricate shapes with care.
Aluminum 2017 offers high strength, excellent machinability, good corrosion resistance, and ease of welding, making it ideal for custom forgings in aerospace, military, and high-performance applications.
Aluminium 2017 forgings are a go-to choice in industries that demand high strength and reliability. You’ll often find them in aerospace applications, where they’re used for aircraft fittings and structural components. In the automotive world, they play a crucial role in performance-critical parts, while in the defense sector, they’re valued for their durability. Thanks to their excellent machinability and resistance to fatigue, these alloys are perfect for precision parts like shafts, gears, and rivets. Their impressive strength-to-weight ratio makes them especially useful in transportation, structural frameworks, and high-performance machinery. Plus, they’re also utilized in the manufacturing of marine and sports equipment, where lightweight yet tough materials are essential to handle tough conditions.
