Aluminium 5086 forgings are primarily made up of aluminium alloyed with magnesium (3.5%–4.5%), manganese (0.2%–0.7%), along with trace amounts of iron, silicon, chromium, and copper. While this alloy isn’t heat treatable, it does gain strength through strain hardening. It boasts excellent corrosion resistance, particularly in marine settings. Typical mechanical properties include a tensile strength ranging from 290 to 350 MPa and a yield strength of about 200 to 276 MPa, depending on the temper. The elongation usually falls between 12% and 20%, which ensures good formability. These characteristics make Aluminium 5086 a reliable choice for applications that demand both strength and resilience against harsh conditions.

Aluminum 5086 is not ideal for high-temperature forging applications due to its relatively low melting point and limited strength at elevated temperatures. It is better suited for marine and structural applications.
Aluminum 5086 offers high strength, excellent corrosion resistance, and weldability. It is ideal for marine environments, aerospace applications, and custom forgings requiring durability, lightweight properties, and easy fabrication.
Aluminum 5086's excellent workability enables easy forging, allowing it to maintain strength and formability. However, its susceptibility to cold working requires careful temperature control during forging to prevent cracking.
Aluminium 5086 forgings are a go-to choice in industries that prioritize strength, corrosion resistance, and lightweight characteristics. You’ll often find this alloy in marine applications like boat hulls, superstructures, and bulkheads, thanks to its impressive resistance to saltwater. It’s also a popular pick for military vehicles, pressure vessels, transportation components, and structural elements in bridges and buildings. In the aerospace and defense sectors, Aluminium 5086 stands out for its durability in extreme conditions. Plus, its ability to perform well without needing heat treatment makes it perfect for welded structures and components that face dynamic loads, ensuring they remain reliable even in tough environments.
